It's really complicated to think about why people do the things they do and why they think the way they think. Every person in my mind has for selves the real self, the ideal self, the looking glass self and the self as others see you. Yes for all you philosophers I stole this theory but it is a good one at that. When you think about it people change how they act depending on various influences both physical and mental, we all act different around certain people and we all see ourselves differently than others see us. We have this image of who we are and who we want to be, but yet none of these images are really us. Our real self is hidden underneath all these other images...and as the theory goes as you get older you find out what your real self truly is. At approx age 20 you know only 25% of who you really are and as you get older that percentage increases. But with today's media this is getting smaller and smaller in my eyes anyways. Because we are constantly being told who we are and what we want, and we believe it. Advertising for an example does exactly this; it creates needs and wants for consumers than manipulates them through strategy and frequency to obtain this. So really the more you see something the more you will remember it. A study was done last year on 3 year olds, and on average a 3 year old can recognize 100 logos. A 3 YEAR OLD! Now think about how many logo you actually have seen and remembered a lot more than you probably realize. But that's media, advertising and marketing in today's generation. Now today's youth views over 40 000 TV commercials per year. Parents do not realize the impact on children these advertisements have. 60% of the time children don't know when the program starts and when it ends (this was found after a study in the Netherlands was done). But anyways... that's enough for now.
Sincerely,
Philosopher of the mind and heart.
